What is a water treatment plant?

A water treatment plant improves the quality of raw water, such as borewell, surface, municipal or tanker water, so that it meets the requirements of its end use. Depending on the source and the target, treatment removes suspended solids, turbidity, iron, hardness, organic matter, dissolved salts or microorganisms.

No single treatment train suits every source. Borewell water with high iron needs different treatment from turbid surface water or hard municipal supply. The plant is designed by working backwards from the treated-water quality required.

How a water treatment plant works

Stages are selected for the source water. Most plants use only some of the steps below.

  1. Raw water intake and storage

Water is collected and stored so that flow to the treatment stages is steady and measurable.

  2. Aeration or oxidation

Where iron, manganese or dissolved gases are present, aeration or chemical oxidation prepares them for removal.

  3. Coagulation, flocculation and clarification

For turbid or surface water, chemicals bind fine particles into larger flocs that settle out in a clarifier.

  4. Filtration

Multimedia or other filters remove remaining suspended solids and turbidity.

  5. Activated carbon filtration

Carbon adsorbs chlorine, organic compounds, colour and odour where these need to be reduced.

  6. Softening or ion exchange

Where hardness would cause scaling, softening removes calcium and magnesium; demineralization removes dissolved minerals more fully.

  7. Membrane purification

Ultrafiltration or RO is added where fine particles or dissolved solids must be reduced further.

  8. Disinfection and storage

Treated water is disinfected where required and stored ready for distribution or use.

Where water treatment plants are used

Industrial process water

Water conditioned to suit the process it feeds.

Cooling and utility make-up

Treatment that limits scaling, fouling and corrosion in utility systems.

Boiler feed preparation

Softening or demineralization stages ahead of boilers.

Commercial and residential buildings

Filtration, softening and purification for building water supply.

Institutions and campuses

Reliable treated water for schools, hospitals and large facilities.

Feed for further purification

Pretreatment ahead of RO, DM or other polishing steps.

How Aquantam approaches water treatment plants

Aquantam builds each water treatment plant as a customized treatment train, not a fixed catalogue model. We review your water data, propose the stages that suit it and, where included in scope, support manufacturing, installation and commissioning.

Discuss Your Requirement

What determines water treatment plant design

  • Raw water source and how much it varies
  • Turbidity, iron, hardness, TDS and organics
  • Required treated-water quality
  • Flow rate and peak demand
  • Storage and available space
  • Operating and maintenance needs
  • Power and chemical use
  • Future expansion

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a water treatment plant and an RO plant?

A water treatment plant is the overall system that prepares raw water for use and may include filtration, clarification, softening and other stages. An RO plant is one type of membrane-based step, often used within or after a water treatment plant.

Which raw water sources can be treated?

Borewell, surface, municipal and tanker water can all be treated. The treatment stages depend on the contaminants each source carries.

What is a water purification plant?

A water purification plant treats water to a higher quality, often for drinking or sensitive process use, using stages such as filtration, carbon adsorption, membranes and disinfection.

How is water treatment plant capacity decided?

Capacity is based on average and peak demand, operating hours and expected growth, and is refined against your water-use data.

Does Aquantam supply industrial water treatment plants?

Yes. Aquantam designs and manufactures industrial water treatment plants engineered around feed-water quality, end use and capacity.
